A SalesBook contact is someone you have uploaded to your SalesBook contact list.  It is important to upload your contacts into your SalesBook account.  You will then be able to create a Private folder and select those contacts you wish to grant access.  You also use your contacts to send e-mail announcements.  A contact can be a colleague, client/customer, prospect, or anyone.
